"Sci-Fi-Sci 2023" to feature three fantastic science-fiction films
****************************************************************************
Co-organised by the Film Programmes Office, the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Hong Kong Space Museum of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), "Sci-Fi-Sci 2023" will showcase from April 2 to 16 three science-fiction films namely "Moon" (2009), "Contact" (1997) and "Waterworld" (1995) that contemplate the future of the human species through fictional stories based on science. The films will be screened at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive. "Sci-Fi-Sci 2023" is one of the programmes of the HK SciFest 2023 held by the Hong Kong Science Museum from March 31 to April 16.

In addition, Teaching Fellow of the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dr Leung Chun-sing, Assistant Professor of the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Hong Kong Dr Alan Wong, Chief Experimental Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory Miss Eliza Chan, and Assistant Curators of the Hong Kong Space Museum Miss Gloria Cheung and Dr So Chu-wing will speak at post-screening talks respectively to explore various areas of science with the audiences.

In "Moon", the protagonist is a dedicated fuel miner working alone at a lunar base. Just before his anticipated return to Earth at the end of the mission, he inadvertently reveals a dark secret of his employer. A battle of science ethics and wits ensues.

Adapted from a fiction by renowned astronomer Carl Sagan, "Contact" tells a story of hurdles encountered by a scientist in her lifelong pursuit of extraterrestrial intelligence. The depiction of the protagonist's struggles against various conflicting social forces in the film brings to the fore the idea that the greatest hindrance to human's science progress is from humans themselves.

"Waterworld" is set in the distant future of the year 2500, when human civilisations on land are submerged under the rising water caused by global warming. Having lost the abundant supply of natural resources on land, the postapocalyptic humans need to fight for survival above a vast ocean. The film arouses the audiences' awareness of the impending disastrous consequences of climate change.

All films are in English and with Chinese subtitles.
