Winning gardens on display at Hong Kong Flower Show (with photos)
*****************************************************************
The Hong Kong Flower Show 2018 is currently running at Victoria Park. Apart from beautiful floral arrangements and mosaiculture works, the winning entries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s Oriental Style Garden Plot Competition and Western Style Garden Plot Competition are also being displayed at the showground.

Islands District's "Nature that Smiles" and Sha Tin District's "Sweet Appeal" have won the Oriental Style Garden Plot Competition and the Western Style Garden Plot Competition respectively. All entries in the Garden Plot Competitions were designed by staff of the LCSD's District Leisure Services Offices.

"Nature that Smiles" is a Thai garden that blends nature into everyday living. The design is inspired by Thailand, known as the "Land of Smiles" because the Thais are well known for their friendliness and hospitality. The garden is planted with tropical plants, giving an impression of a jungle. Aquatic plants grow in the pond, while orchids by the waterside pavilion flutter like butterflies, creating a relaxing and enjoyable ambience for visitors.

The design of the "Sweet Appeal" garden is modelled after the French confectionary petits fours. Plush dark green plants on the four sides form a "box" that contains eight "desserts" decorated mainly with flowers. The unique design, eye-catching colours and lovely scent of this garden create a sweet appeal for visitors.

This year the winner of the Environmental Cup for a Western Style Garden is Kwun Tong District's "Sponge City". Its ground surface works like a sponge, collecting rainwater and directing it to the water-collection device underneath for recycling, hence reducing water wastage and carbon emissions. The winner of the Environmental Cup for an Oriental Style Garden is Sai Kung District's "Heartfelt Bliss". The Japanese garden has been praised for its simplistic design, which offers a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere.

The flower show is running until this Sunday (March 25) from 9am to 9pm daily. Some 400 000 flowering plants are on display. A rich diversity of educational and recreational fringe activities are also being held for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages.

The flower show is organised by the LCSD. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting the flower show for the sixth consecutive year and has been the show's Major Sponsor since 2014.
