SEN visits Central and Western District (with photos)
*****************************************************
The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, visited a secondary school and an environmental education centre in Central and Western District this afternoon (October 4). He also exchanged views with members of the Central and Western District Council (C&WDC) and young people on environmental issues.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the C&WDC, Mr Yip Wing-shing, and the District Officer (Central and Western), Mrs Susanne Wong, Mr Wong first visited Lok Sin Tong Leung Kau Kui College to learn about its green policies and the students' experience in joining green activities. The school has obtained the Hong Kong Green School Award Silver Award presented by the Environmental Campaign Committee. Being a signatory of the Energy Saving Charter 2016, the school has been actively practising energy saving and waste reduction. It has also committed itself to cultivating environmental awareness among students through different kinds of activities to encourage them to adopt green living.

Mr Wong then visited the Lung Fu Shan Environmental Education Centre. The centre was jointly established by the Environmental Protection Department and the University of Hong Kong in 2008 to promote environmental education and enhance public understanding of sustainable development and low-carbon living. It also serves to raise public awareness on biodiversity, climate change and other environmental education topics by holding a wide range of eco-tours, talks and seminars, volunteer training programmes and workshops.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Wong met with the C&WDC members at a tea gathering to hear their views on district environmental issues and the Government's environmental protection work, especially on municipal solid waste (MSW) charging. He thanked the District Council for its support rendered to the Government's work. Mr Wong said that the Government will announce the details of MSW charging at a suitable time, and will fully collaborate with District Councils and other stakeholders to promote waste reduction at source and clean recycling to enable members of the public to prepare early for the implementation of MSW charging.
