Film Archive's "The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Qipao" exhibition launches cultural journey (with photos)

     A daily wear of women in bygone days, qipao has become a distinctive kind of costume in cinema. The exhibition "The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Qipao", organised by the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is now held at the Exhibition Hall of the HKFA until January 1 next year. The exhibition showcases 24 pieces qipao dresses featured in movies of different eras, which are presented to visitors in their dazzling glamour.

     The exhibition, taking visitors on a cultural journey through time, comprises five thematic zones, namely "Women in Wartime", "Modern Girls", "Stars on the Stage", "Wife Life" and "Souls in the Shadows". On display are qipao costumes that appeared in movies from the 1940s to the 2000s and were worn by actresses including Bai Guang in "Blood Will Tell" (1949), Zhou Xuan in "The Flower Street" (1950), Linda Lin Dai in "The Orphan Girl" (1956), Hsia Moon in "Sunrise" (1956), Li Xianglan in "An Unforgettable Night" (1958), Anita Mui in "Kawashima Yoshiko" (1990), Maggie Cheung in "Centre Stage" (1992) and "The Soong Sisters" (1997), Joey Wong and Miyazawa Rie in "Peony Pavilion" (2001). In addition, specially edited film clips will be screened at the venue, allowing visitors to admire the charm of the qipao-wearing stars.

     To complement the exhibition, the "Mini Wool Felt Qipao DIY Workshop" will be held from 10.15am to 1pm on November 11, 12, 25 and 26 at the 1/F Foyer of the HKFA, at which participants will be able to try their hand at being a Qipao tailor. Also, a seminar entitled "The Charm of Qipao: The Daily Wear that Became a Cultural Icon" will be held at 4.30pm on November 25 at the HKFA Cinema, to be hosted by textile and costume specialist Edith Cheung in Cantonese.
