The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, officiated at the Certificate Presentation Ceremony of the Service Corps programme today (April 26). He presented certificates of appreciation to members of Phase 1 of the programme in recognition of their active participation and successful completion of service at Shaoguan, China.

Mr Tsang was pleased to learn that Phase 1 of the programme was a great success. On behalf of the HKSAR Government, he thanked the members for their enthusiasm and hoped the programme would continue to thrive.

At the ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, said, "Even though the living and working environment is different from that of Hong Kong, all members have devoted themselves to their service, displaying the volunteering spirit of 'dedication, friendship, mutual help and improvement'. I believe the service and training have not only brought you invaluable experience and unforgettable memories, but also helped promote the volunteering culture."

Mr Tsang Tak-sing hoped all members could uphold their beliefs, seeking for self-enhancement so as to strive for a better future and better serve the community.

He also thanked the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government and the Shaoguan Municipal People's Government for their tremendous support in providing teaching placements in the four secondary and primary schools, which contributed to the successful implementation of Phase I of the Service Corps programme.

The Chief Executive announced in the 2010-11 Policy Address the establishment of the Service Corps to provide financial support for youths aged 18 to 29 to serve in underprivileged areas of the Mainland for six to 12 months. With the aim of fostering youth development and serving our Mainland compatriots, the Service Corps programme encourages the younger generation to receive training, embrace challenges, strive for continuous self-improvement, and contribute to the well-being of the motherland.

The 15 members of Phase I of the Service Corps programme were sent to four schools in Shaoguan, namely Longgui Secondary School, Longgui Primary School, Lishi Town Centre Primary School and Huaping Experimental School, to provide teaching assistance to primary and junior secondary students in various subjects from September 2011 to January 2012.

Phase II of the Service Corps programme was launched in February this year. The recruitment preparation for Phase III of the programme is also under way. For more details, please visit the website at www.servicecorps.hk .
