Suspect in connection with a murder case returned to Hong Kong

     The Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) received a male suspect in connection with a murder case from the Mainland authorities at the Shenzhen Bay Port yesterday (May 16).

     The 54-year-old man was in suspected connection with a murder happened in Sham Shui Po on September 22, 1999, in which a 40-year-old woman died. 

     Police later obtained information about the suspect and learned that he was in the Mainland. Police then sought assistance from the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department. The suspect was subsequently arrested in the Mainland.

     The man has been laid a holding charge with one count of murder. The case will be mentioned at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow (May 18) morning.

     The HKPF was grateful for the invaluable assistance rendered by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau and relevant departments, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect. The arrest of the suspect in the Mainland demonstrated the determination of the Police and other different law enforcement agencies in combating crimes jointly and to uphold the rule of law.

     Concerning the aforementioned case, Police arrested six other men, then aged between 25 and 40, from 2005 to 2010. Five of them were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court, while another arrestee was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

     Active investigation by Regional Crime Unit of Kowloon West is under way.
