Contractors fined for violation of safety legislation

Chiu Hing Construction & Transportation Company Limited, Dixie Engineering Company Limited and Wah Fung Building & Engineering Limited were fined $256,000, $216,000 and $217,000 respectively at the Shatin Magistrates' Courts today (December 5) for violations of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Safety Management) Regulation. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on April 22, 2024, at a sewer pipe clearing work site in Sha Tin. Two workers, while conducting clearing work, lost consciousness and died inside a manhole. Two more workers were injured when they tried to rescue the two deceased workers.
