Through intelligence analysis, Hong Kong Customs intercepted an express consignment from Thailand, declared as assorted beads and sent to Hong Kong via the Mainland, on November 3. Upon examination, a total of about 3.6kg of suspected cannabis buds were found concealed inside three plastic boxes.
Customs officers subsequently mounted a controlled delivery operation in Sham Shui Po yesterday and arrested a 30-year-old man suspected to be connected with the case. The man was later escorted to a residential unit nearby for a search, where Customs officers further seized about 400g of suspected cannabis buds and about 25g of suspected MDMA.
The arrestee, who claimed to be unemployed, has been charged with one count of attempting to traffic in a dangerous drug and one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (November 6).
Customs reminds members of the public to stay alert and not to participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return. They must not accept hiring or delegation from another party to carry controlled items into and out of Hong Kong. They are also reminded not to carry unknown items for other people.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
Members of the public may report any suspected drug trafficking activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
