A delegation of the Advisory Committee on Water Supplies (ACWS) departed for Guangdong Province yesterday (November 4) to visit the Dongjiang (DJ) Water Supply System and learn about the latest situation of matters in relation to DJ water supplied to Hong Kong. As this year marks the 60th anniversary of DJ water supply to Hong Kong, the Drinking Water Safety Advisory Committee (DWSAC) also joined the visit to inspect the quality of DJ water supplied to Hong Kong. The delegation concluded its fruitful two-day visit today (November 5). Both committees agreed that the DJ Water Supply System is well managed and that the DJ water supplied to Hong Kong is of good quality.
During the two-day visit, the delegation visited the main operational facilities of the DJ Water Supply System, including the Xinfengjiang Reservoir in Heyuan, the DJ River Basin Water Quantity and Quality Monitoring and Control Centre in Huizhou, the intake point of DJ water supplied to Hong Kong at Taiyuan Pumping Station in Dongguan, the Jinhu aqueduct in Tangxia, Dongguan, the Shenzhen Reservoir, and the adjacent Environmental Water Quality Monitoring Centre. The delegation was briefed by the officers concerned about the design and operation of the facilities of the Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply System and inspected the quality of DJ water supplied to Hong Kong.
In summing up the visit, the Chairman of the ACWS, Professor Joseph Kwan, considered the two-day visit, covering several major operational facilities of the DJ Water Supply System, to be enriching. It deepened members' understanding of the situation of the DJ water supplied to Hong Kong and allowed members to observe the good quality of the DJ water at a close distance. Members deeply appreciated the country's long-standing support in safeguarding the quality and quantity of DJ water supplied to Hong Kong, which has contributed to Hong Kong's prosperity and steady growth. He also praised Heyuan as a good example of balancing ecological conservation and economic development, highlighting its commitment to protecting DJ water sources while leveraging its high-quality water sources and ecological environment to sustainably develop eco-tourism, the water beverage and food industries.
The Chairman of the DWSAC, Dr Chan Hon-fai, remarked during the visit to the Xinfengjiang Reservoir that the Reservoir, located in the upper stream of the DJ River Basin, maintains stable surface water quality and serves as a vital fresh water source for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He expressed satisfaction with the local authorities' concerted efforts in safeguarding DJ water quality. A young ACWS member noted that this visit held special significance as this year marks the 60th anniversary of DJ water supply to Hong Kong. Through the inspection of the DJ Water Supply System and exchanges with government officials of Guangdong Province, he gained a deeper understanding of the stringent water resources protection regulations and measures formulated and implemented by the country, as well as the substantial investments made in infrastructure, and research and application of technological innovation to ensure a stable supply of high-quality DJ water to Hong Kong. He deeply felt the country's care and steadfast support for the well-being of Hong Kong society.
The terms of reference of the ACWS are to advise the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region through the Director of Water Supplies on matters relating to water supplies, including water resources, network management, regulation and control of inside service, water conservation and other operational matters.
