FSD and CUHK sign MOU to jointly organise training module on emergency care and preparedness (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Fire Services Department (FSD) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today (November 4) to establish a collaborative partnership between the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy (FASA), as well as the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of the CUHK, in organising a training module on emergency care and preparedness, with a view to promoting community safety education and the all-rounded development of young people.

The training module will cover practical skills and knowledge including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of automated external defibrillators, fire safety, emergency evacuation procedures, and emergency treatment of sports injuries. The purpose of the training module is to increase students' self-protection awareness and emergency response capabilities, thereby strengthening the overall emergency response level of the community.

The FSD has been formulating and implementing strategies on community emergency preparedness, while the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of the CUHK play important roles in nurturing talent in the fields of sports and public health respectively. The collaboration will facilitate the FSD in deepening community-based public safety education, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, and collectively building a safer and more resilient Hong Kong.

Witnessed by the Commandant of the FASA, Mr Cheu Yu-kok; the Dean of the Faculty of Education of the CUHK, Professor Fan Xitao; and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the CUHK, Professor Philip Chiu, the MOU was signed by the Deputy Commandant (Ambulance Services Training) of the FASA, Ms Kapo Cheung; the Chairperson of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of the CUHK, Professor Stephen Wong; and the Director of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of the CUHK, Professor Samuel Wong.

Mr Cheu stated that the collaboration not only provides students with practical skills training beyond academics but also helps enhance their confidence and ability in handling emergencies such as cardiac arrest, thereby strengthening the rescue support network in the community, which gives patients a precious chance of survival. He pointed out that the signing of the MOU symbolises a new stage in the co-operation between the two parties, and they will continue to expand diverse training programmes in the future to equip the young generation to meet the needs of society. Moreover, Mr Cheu appealed to the participants to cast their votes in the upcoming Legislative Council General Election on December 7 to fulfil their civic responsibility.

Professor Fan and Professor Chiu expressed their gratitude to the FSD for its support for the collaboration. Professor Fan stated that the module would enable students to integrate academic knowledge with emergency safety awareness, thereby enhancing their vigilance and problem-solving skills in emergencies and demonstrating a spirit of mutual support in the community. Professor Chiu said that the collaboration will make medical education more relevant to the community and responsive to the needs of the times, while also cultivating in students a people-oriented spirit and the courage to save lives during emergencies.

The training module will be included as a core module in the curriculum of the CUHK's Bachelor of Education in Physical Education, Exercise Science and Health; Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Health Education; Bachelor of Science in Human Movement Science and Health Studies; Bachelor of Science in Public Health; Bachelor of Science in Community Health Practice; and Bachelor of Science in Gerontology. Students who have completed the module will become members of the Resuscitation Alliance who pledge to step forward and protect lives through concrete actions when encountering cardiac arrest incidents.
