Around 400 young music campers to showcase achievements in concerts

Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2023 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts, entitled "A Feast of Chinese and Western Classics", will be held at 7.30pm on August 6 and 14 respectively at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. The camp resident musicians, including the Director of Bands and Professor of Conducting from the Greenwood School of Music of Oklahoma State University of the United States, Dr Bradley Genevro; Assistant Professor of Teaching of the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts from the Education University of Hong Kong Dr Paulina Wong; renowned conductor and composer Simon Kong; the Principal Violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Ling; and instrumental tutor of cello of the Education University of Hong Kong Chor Kai-hei, will conduct at the concerts. Renowned zheng performer Ma Hang will also perform as a guest soloist. The concerts are part of the commemorative programmes in celebration of the Music Office transcending beyond its 45-year mark, as well as part of the International Arts Carnival (IAC) summer programme.
The first concert will be performed by the camp's Children's Choir, Junior String Orchestra, Junior Chinese Orchestra and Symphonic Band. Highlights include two choral songs, "Viewing the Lushan Waterfall" which adopted Li Bai's poem of the same title and "Peace Fiesta", a piece transcending different cultures and promoting the messages of joy, peace and love; a delicate strings arranged piece by Kenny Choy of Edward Elgar's "Chanson de Matin et de Nuit, Op. 15" ; "Song of the Water-logged Region" which portrays the lively temple fair in the Jiangnan region; the Hong Kong premiere of Simon Kong's "Ode to Lucid Water and Lush Mountains", inspired by Zhuangzi's hermit lifestyle; and "Hymn for the Innocent" which mourns the deceased and provides solace to their families through melodies.
The camp's Chinese Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra will perform an array of fascinating music pieces in the second concert. Highlights include "Grand Festival of Tianshan" which is based on tunes with a Xinjiang flavour; zheng concerto "As Thus" which portrays the myriad changes in the world; "Typhoon" which depicts the destruction brought by and the reconstruction of homeland after the natural hazard; and Ludwig van Beethoven's breathtaking "Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92".
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer activity held by the Music Office, providing diversified training to young musicians in a relaxed setting.
