LegCo Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City visits Geospatial Lab (with photos)

The Legislative Council Subcommittee on Matters Relating to the Development of Smart City visited the Geospatial Lab (GeoLab) today (May 9) to learn about the latest progress of the GeoLab, established by the Development Bureau, on promoting the development of spatial data.
The GeoLab is an initiative of the Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) by the Government and commenced operation in 2021. It encourages application developers and start-ups to develop smart applications by using spatial data with a view to promoting the smart city development.
Members first received a briefing on CSDI by the Head of Spatial Data Office, Mr Chan Yue-chun, to better understand the operation of the GeoLab.
Members then toured the GeoLab and observed the demonstration of various projects, including the Urban Renewal Information System which was developed by the Urban Renewal Authority with the application of Geographic Information System (GIS), as well as the 3D Visualisation Map that can be viewed by members of the public via free software. Members also observed the students' projects in the GeoLab such as using GIS to explore the livability of Tseung Kwan O and the "Pet the Pet" application, which was developed by adopting geospatial data.
During the visit, Members discussed with the Government and representatives of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, operator of the GeoLab, on how to enhance the promotion to the community on the wider application of spatial data.
Members participating in the visit were the Subcommittee Chairman, Ms Elizabeth Quat; the Deputy Chairman, Dr Johnny Ng; and a Subcommittee member Mr Lam San-keung.
