First Mainland study tour for newly-joined teachers begins (with photos)
************************************************************************
The Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms Michelle Li, this morning (April 11) led the first Mainland study tour for newly-joined teachers to Guangzhou by the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link for four days and three nights. The tour aims to enable teachers to learn about the latest situation and development of the country, thereby strengthening their ability to cultivate students' sense of national identity.

About 100 newly-joined teachers from secondary, primary and special schools participated in the study tour. The group first visited South China Normal University (SCNU) and attended the launch ceremony of the trip. Addressing the ceremony, Ms Li thanked the Ministry of Education, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province for their guidance and co-ordination, which facilitated the timely and smooth launch of the study tour following the full resumption of travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland.

She said that SCNU, which has been commissioned to organise the study tour, is a high-quality institution jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province with rich experience and remarkable achievements in teacher training. She believed that its well-planned course content and visit programme would bring fruitful and rewarding experience to Hong Kong's teachers.

Ms Li hoped that all the teachers would cherish the learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the educational, social and cultural developments on the Mainland, and think about the opportunities and role of Hong Kong in the country's development. She also encouraged them to lead students to understand Hong Kong's position in the country's overall development and build a broader stage for the country, Hong Kong and themselves.

Ms Li then visited the Affiliated High School of SCNU and returned to Hong Kong in the evening. Other members of the study tour will continue their visit programme, which includes school tours, thematic seminars and visits to enterprises and cultural sites. They will return to Hong Kong on Friday evening (April 14).
