Update on cluster of Candida auris cases in Kowloon Central Cluster
*******************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on Candida auris carrier cases in Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital (HKBH), the spokesperson for the Kowloon Central Cluster gave the following update today (April 3):

     As one of the patients in HKBH being confirmed to carry Candida auris stayed in Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for treatment earlier, following a contact tracing investigation, a 38-year-old male patient in the neurosurgery ward of QEH was confirmed to carry Candida auris without signs of infection. The patient is now being treated under isolation in QEH and is in stable condition.

     The hospital will continue the following enhanced infection control measures in accordance with the prevailing guidelines to prevent the spread of Candida auris:

  1. Enhanced admission screening for patients and environmental screening procedures;
  2. Applied stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and patients; and
  3. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned.

     The hospital will closely monitor the situation of the ward concerned. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
