Housing Authority arranges visit to mock-up for first MiC Project for Public Housing Development (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

The first public housing project of the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) using Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) in Tung Chung is about to start the superstructure construction. Following an earlier visit by members of the HA and its Building Committee and Tender Committee, the HA today (March 31) arranged another visit to the mock-up of the MiC project for the media and industry stakeholders to learn more about its design. The Secretary for Housing cum Chairman of the HA, Ms Winnie Ho, also joined the visit.

The Assistant Director of Housing (Development and Procurement), Mr Daniel Leung, said today, "The 12-storey domestic block of the public housing development project at Tung Chung Area 99 is one of the HA's first projects using reinforced concrete MiC. This domestic block consists of about 20 units per floor, and the installation of MiC modules will begin later this year."

Mr Leung said that the project team of the Housing Department (HD) built a two-storey full-scale mock-up to test out the design and details for ensuring the effectiveness of the contractor's on-site installation method and built quality.

For the MiC public housing units, the internal floor area, basic installations and fittings of different flat types including Type A flat (for one to two persons), Type B flat (for two to three persons), Type C flat (for three to four persons), and Type D flat (for four to five persons) are basically the same as those of the current public housing standard units.

In addition to the briefing on MiC design details, the HD's project team also introduced the process of MiC module fabrication in a Mainland factory, logistics arrangement and on-site installation details. Through the project, the HD will evaluate the overall cost effectiveness and assess the opportunities and challenges of adopting MiC, which would facilitate a wider application of MiC in suitable public housing developments in future.

Mr Leung said that the HA is committed to enhancing the design and application of MiC. Through the development of the second generation MiC, the target is to further enhance operation process, quality, efficiency and structural performance, which is a breakthrough in Hong Kong's reinforced concrete MiC. The achievement will be shared with the industry.

The HD's project team also briefly introduced the Project Dashboard to be implemented in this project, which is a digital platform for the project team's real-time monitoring of the project information, progress and safety performance of site works, etc. For this MiC project, the dashboard is tailor-made to cover the real-time monitoring of the whole MiC process from its fabrication in the Mainland factory, logistics arrangement to installation on site, so as to provide the latest construction information to HD's project team for monitoring of the overall project.

The team also briefly introduced a set of MiC specific safety precaution measures, which was developed by the HA and the Occupational Safety and Health Council to address the risks associated with the lifting of MiC at the factory and on site. Meanwhile, the HA also actively adopted mobile applications for site supervision, streamlined communication on construction sites, and enhanced site safety management through innovative technology.
