Hongkong Post to issue "Hong Kong Museums Collection - Jingguanlou" special stamps (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Hongkong Post announced today (March 8) that a special stamp issue and associated philatelic products on the theme of "Hong Kong Museums Collection - Jingguanlou" will be released for sale on March 23 (Thursday).

Donated to the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 2021, Jingguanlou is a private art collection compiled by renowned collector and photographer Dr Leo Wong. The collection is primarily on 20th-century Chinese paintings and calligraphy. It covers mainly valuable works by masters of the Shanghai School of painting, with the most comprehensive collection of artworks created by three masters, namely Zhu Qizhan (1892-1996), Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997) and Chen Peiqiu (1923-2020), at different stages of their lives.

Hongkong Post is continuing its Hong Kong Museums Collection series by issuing a set of six stamps, two stamp sheetlets and associated philatelic products on the theme of "Hong Kong Museums Collection - Jingguanlou" to showcase selected classic artworks by these three masters from the Jingguanlou collection.

Zhu Qizhan was a renowned centenarian master of the 20th century in Chinese painting. He developed a unique style that well fused the East and the West with skilful use of colour and ink. The art pieces used in the stamp design include "Mountain Ranges from the Front" that incorporates the expressive colour presentation of Western art in traditional Chinese blue-and-green landscape painting, "Wintry Mountains" that creates a scene of utter desolation with wintry mountains amid the morning mist expressed in abstract colours, and "Jiangnan in March" that portrays Jiangnan in misty spring rain.

Xie Zhiliu was a distinguished master of the Shanghai School in the 20th century. His blue-and-green landscapes in later years were noted for their distinctive character, forming a style of his own. The stamp products feature "Towering Peaks" that vividly illustrates the robust and majestic monumental landscapes of the Northern Song, as well as "Valleys in Mountains", which is a rare masterpiece of exquisite blue-and-green landscape painting by Xie.

Chen Peiqiu and her husband Xie Zhiliu were both prominent figures of the Shanghai School. She was known for her outstanding achievements in the fields of painting, calligraphy and art authentication. The stamp products capture "Landscape and Calligraphy" that enriches traditional landscape painting with her own sense of modernity, "Cicada Resting on a Red Leaf" that implicitly renders the endless autumn vibes with the portrayal of a red leaf and a cicada, and "Birds and Bamboo" that was jointly painted by Chen and Xie, reflecting a perfect collaboration between the couple in their art journey.

Official first day covers for "Hong Kong Museums Collection - Jingguanlou" will be put on sale at all post offices from tomorrow (March 9), and on Hongkong Post's online shopping mall ShopThruPost (shopthrupost.hongkongpost.hk).
