****************************************************************
The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, today (February 10) met with Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People's Government Ms Zhang Hua and officials from the General Office and Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of Shenzhen Government as well as the Ecology Environment Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. They exchanged views on environmental industry co-operation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and also the planning, construction and operation of waste management facilities. The Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment), Miss Janice Tse, also joined the meeting and further spoke with officials from the Ecology Environment Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality on issues such as biodiversity conservation, air quality, strengthening collaboration on improving the environmental quality of water in the Shenzhen River/Bay Basin, waste reduction and recycling, etc.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Shenzhen Government have been working closely to exchange information and share knowledge in areas such as regional air quality, waste management, improvement of water quality of water bodies, conservation of wetland in the Deep Bay and promotion of environmental industry co-operation to complement the planning and development of the country.

"The report to the 20th National Congress clearly stated a firm adherence to the ideology that 'lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets' and a focus on the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature in development planning. The HKSAR Government will continue to strengthen co-operation with other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, especially the adjacent Shenzhen Municipality, in environmental protection and ecological conservation. We will also join forces to address the environmental protection issues of mutual concern to the public of the two places and to contribute proactively to the country's carbon reduction initiatives for achieving carbon neutrality," said Mr Tse.

In the afternoon of the same day, accompanied by staff of the Environmental Protection Department, representatives of the Ecology Environment Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality visited the North East New Territories Landfill to gain a better understanding about the work of waste disposal, including the use of advanced landfill technology to minimise the impacts on nearby residents and the environment.

Accompanied by the staff of the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the delegation will visit Tai Mo Shan Country Park and Mai Po Nature Reserve tomorrow (February 11) to learn more about Hong Kong's experience in the protection of natural environment and in ecological conservation.
