Re-industrialisation Funding Scheme funds project to set up smart production line for mooncake products (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
To support the food manufacturing and processing industry to set up new smart production lines in Hong Kong, the Re-industrialisation Funding Scheme (RFS) under the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) today (February 9) has approved $15 million for a project by Luk Yeung Restaurant Limited to set up a new smart production line for mooncake products. Luk Yeung Restaurant Limited is a member of Hong Kong Maxim's Group, a well-known food and beverage company founded in Hong Kong in 1956.

The Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun, said, "Food products of Hong Kong are world renowned and maintain high standards in food safety and food quality. The ITC encourages Hong Kong's food manufacturing industry to leverage its strong competitive advantages. With the funding support of the RFS, new smart production lines can be set up in Hong Kong to increase production capacity, enable exploration of more new markets for the industry and let the 'Made in Hong Kong' brand shine".

The approved total project cost is about $49 million and the manufacturer will bear the cost of about $34 million. The project will be carried out in the Tai Po InnoPark, adopting advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things, robotics and automation, an advanced human-machine interface, machine vision and digital manufacturing systems to set up a real-time data-driven smart production line for mooncake products. The products will mainly be sold in the local market, but will also be exported to other markets.

Under the RFS, the Government will provide funding on a 1 (Government): 2 (company) matching basis to subsidise manufacturers to establish smart production lines in Hong Kong. The funding ceiling is one-third of the total project cost or $15 million, whichever is lower. The RFS was launched in July 2020. As at end of January 2023, the RFS Vetting Committee has supported 31 applications, covering sectors such as biotechnology, food manufacturing and processing, textiles and clothing, construction, printing, medical devices, nanofiber materials, satellite manufacturing, electronics, equipment accessories, health products and Chinese medicine. The total funding amount is about $270 million and the matching amount provided by the companies is over $730 million.

The RFS is open for application throughout the year. Details are available at the website of the Innovation and Technology Fund (www.itf.gov.hk/en/funding-programmes/facilitating-technology/rfs).
