The following is issued on behalf of the Transport Advisory Committee:

The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) was briefed today (January 31) on legislative amendment proposals on updating the construction of vehicle requirements to improve road safety.

The Government has been endeavoring to ensure the safety of road users by adopting a multi-pronged strategy through the application of new technology, improvements to transport facilities and traffic management, legislation and stepping up enforcement, as well as publicity and education, etc. Having considered the latest international vehicle construction and maintenance standards and automotive technology developments, road conditions in Hong Kong, and after a detailed review of the relevant legislation and making reference to the systems in other regions, the Government proposed seven legislative amendments to improve road safety. Among others, these include requiring the installation of an over-height warning system for vehicles with extendable aerial structures, revising the statutory requirements in relation to the use of vehicle display units, and revising the driving rules to enable the use of remote control parking function by drivers. The Government aims at submitting the above legislative amendment proposals to the Legislative Council within the first half of this year.

The TAC Chairman, Professor Stephen Cheung, said, "Members support the legislative proposals to update the construction of vehicle requirements, and welcome the Government's move to introduce new automotive technology and bring local vehicle safety standards in line with prevalent international vehicle standards and technological developments. The proposals not only enhance road safety, but also enable citizens to experience greater convenience brought about by innovative vehicle features."
