FEHD's Lunar New Year fairs operate smoothly
********************************************
A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said today (January 17) that its 15 Lunar New Year (LNY) fairs, with a total of 922 wet goods stalls, opened yesterday and have been operating smoothly so far. This year, the FEHD has increased the size of the stalls, widened the passageways, and applied technology for crowd management, with a view to providing members of the public a more comfortable and safer shopping experience. The FEHD has also offered assistance to stall vendors in various aspects such as security, illumination and refuse collection to ensure the smooth running of the LNY fairs.

Members of the public planning to visit LNY fairs may browse the information on the opening times and locations of the LNY fairs at the FEHD's dedicated webpage (www.fehd.gov.hk) in advance. The waiting status for entry of the LNY fairs is also displayed in a "Green, Amber and Red Lights" format on the FEHD website and on site simultaneously. When necessary, ticketing systems may be implemented at three LNY fairs with high patron flow, including Victoria Park (Causeway Bay), Fa Hui Park (Sham Shui Po) and Sha Tsui Road Playground (Tsuen Wan), for crowd management. The public may get a ticket on site or obtain an e-ticket through the mobile app which can be downloaded at the FEHD website.

In terms of venue management, apart from providing security, refuse collection and illumination at the fair venues, the FEHD also appointed contractors as in previous practice to provide additional power supply for illumination facilities, etc, upon request by individual stalls. The service charge would be set by the contractors according to the estimated charges stipulated in the tender, as well as the illumination and power supply as required by the individual stalls.

In regard to recent media reports that individual stalls at the Shek Wu Hui Playground (North District) LNY Fair had encountered problems of power supply, the spokesman clarified that it was because the venue contractor failed to meet the contractual requirements to provide service for the two stalls which had applied for additional power supply. After learning of the incident, the FEHD immediately appointed another contractor, and managed to provide power supply for the stalls concerned at the original charge one day before the opening of the LNY Fair. Some other stalls had applied for additional power supply afterwards, and the substitute contractor could also make proper arrangements accordingly.

The spokesman stressed that the FEHD will stringently follow up on the contractor's failure to perform the contractual obligations. The FEHD will also closely monitor the operation of all venues to ensure that the LNY fairs operate smoothly and provide a pleasant shopping environment for both the public and the stall vendors.
