LCSD to launch "Percussion in Time" Lecture Demonstration Series

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will launch the "Percussion in Time" Lecture Demonstration Series from February to March. Local percussionist Anna Fan will host the lecture series to introduce the evolution and development of percussion music.

     The four lectures will cover topics of drum set, Latin percussion, Samba percussion and marimba. Fan will explain the impact of percussion on the development of jazz, pop and other musical cultures. She will also demonstrate the techniques and applications of percussion instruments with various guest musicians, allowing the audiences to appreciate the unique grooves and charisma of percussion.

     Details of each lecture are as follows:

Topic: The Birth and Development of Drum Set
Date: February 1 (Wednesday)
Content: To explain how marching drums evolved to drum sets through demonstrations; and to introduce the evolution of cajón, and demonstrate the performance techniques of cajón that applied to different types of music and dance.

Topic: The Essence and Application of Latin Percussion in Popular Music
Date: February 15 (Wednesday)
Content: To introduce and demonstrate various Latin percussion instruments and claves as well as their application to jazz music; and to explain the impact of the salsa dance culture on the development of various music genres.

Topic: The Jazz Side of Samba Percussion
Date: February 22 (Wednesday)
Content: To introduce and demonstrate various Brazilian instruments, and explain how the Brazilian carnival style of parade drumming made its way into the New York jazz scene. Demonstrations will also be given to introduce the characteristics of bossa nova and samba-jazz.

Topic: The Birth and Development of Marimba
Date: March 1 (Wednesday)
Content: To introduce and demonstrate how gyil (an African xylophone) evolved to marimba; followed by the demonstration of the African Ewe drumming, and to explain its influence on the rhythms of musical culture around the world.

     Anna Fan graduated from the Berklee College of Music in the United States. She has collaborated with many veteran jazz musicians including Eugene Pao and Ted Lo, and has performed at various international music festivals. Fan has also arranged and composed percussion music for various ensembles.

     All lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 7.30pm at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum.
