Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     As at yesterday (December 21), a total of 4 178 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 were hospitalised for treatment. Among the hospitalised confirmed patients, 573 were new patients, 2 788 required isolation, 521 required oxygen therapy and 62 required ventilator support. There were 34 newly reported critical patients and 15 newly reported serious patients. There were a total of 158 patients in critical condition and 142 in serious condition, of which 39 critical patients were receiving intensive care. Moreover, there were 516 patients who had recovered, including 437 patients who had been discharged. In addition, 31 patients who passed away in public hospitals were reported.
 
     The Hospital Authority (HA) has reviewed the preliminary statistics of the past week (December 14 to December 20). Among the COVID-19 patients admitted through accident and emergency departments, around 65 per cent were admitted due to COVID-19 infection, while around 35 per cent were admitted due to other medical reasons. For the deceased COVID-19 patients, around 42 per cent potentially died of COVID-19, while around 58 per cent died from other illnesses. The HA will keep analysing the statistics concerned so as to provide appropriate services in accordance with the situation and patient needs.
 
     The overall occupancy of medical beds in acute hospitals is around 110 per cent.
 
     In addition, 17 patients in a male ward for severe intellectual disability at Siu Lam Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday with symptoms. All infected patients are being treated in isolation and are in stable condition. Admission and visiting arrangements for the ward concerned have been suspended. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted in the areas concerned, while infection control measures have been enhanced.
 
     The HA will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.
