With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai (Dubai ETO), the "Making Waves - Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema" film programme completed its 15th and final stop successfully in Dubai in December. The globe-trotting event, presented by Create Hong Kong in collaboration with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Running from December 9 through December 14 (Dubai time) at Dubai's Cinema Akil, this last edition of the programme showcased a selection of eight Hong Kong films ranging from classics to new releases featuring Hong Kong's latest talents. Aside from the film "One Second Champion" which kicked off the festival, local audiences also enjoyed "Mama's Affair", "Chilli Laugh Story", "Time", "Table for Six", "Anita", "Infernal Affairs" (restored), and "Days of Being Wild" (restored) during the six-day event.

Chiu Sin-hang, the director of "One Second Champion"; Kearen Pang, the director of "Mama's Affair"; Coba Cheng, the director of "Chilli Laugh Story"; Ricky Ko, the director of "Time"; and Lin Min-chen, an actress in both "One Second Champion" and "Table for Six", travelled to Dubai to attend sharing sessions with local audiences after the movie screenings. Local film enthusiasts revelled in the opportunity to interact and engage with Hong Kong's filmmakers.

Speaking at the opening night reception to some 100 guests, the Director-General of the Dubai ETO, Mr Damian Lee, thanked the outstanding filmmakers for supporting the event by their presence. Mr Lee remarked that under the National 14th Five-Year Plan, Hong Kong has been designated as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. "It is through festivals like this that we aim to bring a taste of Hong Kong to our friends and partners all over the world. Taking this a step further, the Government of the HKSAR is now encouraging Hong Kong filmmakers to collaborate with their Asian counterparts on co-productions by providing up to HK$9 million in funding to each eligible project under the HK-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme," he said.

Alongside the film festival, the Dubai ETO held a photo exhibition at Dubai's Seeing Things Studio, featuring the works of four renowned Hong Kong unit photographers, namely Jupiter Wong, Wong Wai-lun, Quist Tsang, and Sharon Salad, who have created exceptional still images for nearly 200 local films over the last 25 years. Tsang also travelled from Hong Kong to attend the photo exhibition in person and hosted a workshop for photography enthusiasts to share her experience in creating still images for films.

Looking ahead, the Dubai ETO will continue to showcase the best of Hong Kong's creative and cultural industries not just in Dubai, but also the other emirates of the United Arab Emirates as well as the other member states of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
