Innovation and Technology Support Programme funds art technological innovation project (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
A spokesperson for the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) said today (December 12) that the ITC would, under the Innovation and Technology Support Programme (ITSP), provide funding of $35.4 million for an art technological innovation project to develop Future Cinema Systems (FCS), which allow users to virtually experience history, culture and entertainment in next generation immersive cinematic environments.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the funding agreement, the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun, said, "This cross-territorial research project, carried out by the Hong Kong Baptist University in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, will use the latest technologies to develop the FCS. I am very pleased to see that this project has gained support from various organisations in Hong Kong. I expect that FCS, upon successful commercialisation, will bring infinite possibilities to the development of cultural art and creative industries in Hong Kong and quality employment opportunities. It will also create considerable value to the education, tourism and sports industries, etc."

The President and Vice-Chancellor of the Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor Alexander Wai, stated at the signing ceremony of the funding agreement that this project is not simply an enhancement in digitalisation and intelligent technologies in arts, but a powerful tool for art innovation and development. It will create an innovative multi-modal framework for artists and the creative industries that meets the keen demand of people throughout the world for a next-generation cultural experience and digital entertainment. It supports the development of creative industries with innovative technologies and can be applied in a broader scope to place Hong Kong in the leading role in art-tech development.

This 24-month project is a worldwide first to develop an integrated system for creating the next generation of interactive immersive experiences, including cinema, virtual museum, cultural heritage, multimedia performance and sports. It will develop technological innovations in the fields of visualisation, co-evolutionary narratives and human computer interaction that is powered by artificial intelligence, computer vision, deep learning, virtual reality and generative aesthetics.

Launched since 1999, the ITSP is the largest funding scheme supporting research and development (R&D) under the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF). It aims at supporting applied R&D projects undertaken by local R&D centres, universities and other designated public research institutes with a view to transferring R&D results to local industries. The ITSP has provided a total funding of over $10.9 billion to some 3 000 projects so far. These funded projects cover a wide range of technology areas including biotechnology, information technology, electrical and electronics, manufacturing, materials science and nanotechnology.

The ITSP invites applications for funding every year. Details of the ITSP, and other funding schemes under the ITF, are available at the ITF website (www.itf.gov.hk/en/funding-programmes/index.html).
