********************************************************************************
Organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai (SHETO) and co-organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), "Jin Yong Exhibition - Shanghai", the thematic exhibition on the veteran journalist and renowned writer Dr Louis Cha (pen name Jin Yong), was successfully concluded today (December 11) at Shanghai Library East.

The exhibition is a signature project in the East China region, organised by the SHETO to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. It showcased around 300 exhibits, including Dr Cha's invaluable manuscripts, personal items such as stationery, stamps and a chessboard, newsletters and magazines that serialised his novels, early editions of his novels, photos and film posters, introducing the early career of Dr Cha, the creative process behind his novels, and the impact his novels have had on popular culture for Mainland audiences. The Shanghai Library has also lent rare exhibits including the examination papers of Dr Cha's grandfather, Mr Zha Wenqing, and the genealogy of the Cha family, for displaying in the exhibition. The exhibition also featured artworks from various Hong Kong artists to pay tribute to Dr Cha. Interactive photo-taking spots and games had also been set up to reproduce classic scenes of Jin Yong's martial arts world.

The Director of the SHETO, Mrs Laura Aron, said, "We are delighted to see that the exhibition has been greatly welcomed by audiences in Shanghai and the East China region. The 45-day exhibition has attracted around 60 000 attendees. The comments we received were very positive, which fully reflected Mainland audiences' love towards Jin Yong's works. The exhibition has played a positive role in fostering the cultural exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland."

Mrs Aron added, "Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong/Shanghai Co-operation Conference. I look forward to the continuous efforts of the two cities in strengthening future co-operation on cultural exchanges."

Mrs Aron expressed her gratitude towards Dr Cha's family to make the exhibition a great success. She also thanked various departments from the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Government, including the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism and the Shanghai Library, as well as the LCSD and Ming Ho Publications Corporation Limited for their assistance during the preparation of the exhibition.

During the exhibition, the SHETO has organised a number of side programmes including four online and offline seminars in collaboration with the Shanghai Library. Scholars, critics and actors were invited to dissect Jin Yong's novels. The series of seminars attracted over 300 000 participants in total from online and offline platforms. In addition, students from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music also conducted live performances of classic songs from Jin Yong movies and television dramas on-site during weekends. To continue the enthusiasm for Jin Yong, the SHETO will also co-organise with the Shanghai Film Museum a Jin Yong thematic film festival later to screen several Jin Yong-related movies.
