Thematic Household Survey Report No. 76 published
*************************************************
The Thematic Household Survey Report No. 76 is published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (November 17).

This publication contains key findings on Hong Kong residents' awareness on antimicrobial resistance and use of language based on the Thematic Household Survey conducted during September to December 2021.

Antimicrobial resistance

The survey results showed that, in 2021, 67.9% of persons aged 15 and over reported that they had taken antibiotics before. Vast majority of them (98.8%) had obtained their last taken antibiotics from Western medicine practitioners.

On awareness, a large proportion of persons understood the severity of antimicrobial resistance. For instance, 73.9% of persons aged 15 and over knew that many infections had become increasingly resistant to treatment by antibiotics. However, some people had incorrect knowledge on the use of antibiotics. For example, only 40.3% of persons aged 15 and over correctly identified that cold and flu could not be treated with antibiotics.

Use of language

The survey results showed that, in 2021, among all persons aged 6 to 65, 96.7%, 74.7% and 69.3% of them perceived their language competence respectively in Cantonese, Putonghua and spoken English for daily use as totally sufficient, sufficient or average. These percentages were higher than the corresponding results of a similar survey conducted in 2018 (95.8%, 67.3% and 66.9% respectively).

On written language, 96.0% and 70.7% of persons aged 6 to 65 perceived their language competence respectively in written Chinese and English for daily use as totally sufficient, sufficient or average, which were also higher than the corresponding proportions in 2018 (94.4% and 67.8% respectively).

Other information

The survey successfully enumerated target respondents in some 10 100 households in accordance with a scientific sampling scheme to represent the population of Hong Kong.

Detailed findings of the survey, together with the population coverage and concepts/definitions of key terms, are presented in the above-mentioned publication. Users can download the publication at the website of the C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/EIndexbySubject.html?pcode=B1130201&scode=453).
