Film Archive to hold book launch "Exploring Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s" cum screening event
******************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will hold a book launch of "Exploring Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s" cum screening event at 1pm on November 5 at the HKFA Cinema. Members of the public are invited to join.

With the HKFA's acquisition of a cache of precious film prints and other relevant materials of 1930s and 1940s Hong Kong movies in recent years, a symposium entitled "From Silent to Sound - Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s" was held as part of a series of programmes celebrating the HKFA's 20th anniversary last year. The HKFA published an e-book, "Exploring Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s", which is a collection of the papers and essays presented by scholars and researchers during the symposium. The book launch, to be conducted in Cantonese, will be hosted by the writers and researchers of the publication. "The Light of Women" (1937) directed by Ko Lei-hen will be screened before the book launch. The film, as the earliest Hong Kong fiction film in the HKFA's collection, depicts the hardship faced by the female protagonist who later joins the education sector. She decides to work with other women in agony and become self-reliant. The film is in Cantonese and without subtitles.

Admission to the book launch of "Exploring Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s" cum screening is free with tickets. Tickets will be distributed at the box office of the HKFA starting from October 22 (Saturday), from Mondays to Sundays (except Tuesdays) from 10am to 8pm. Each person can receive up to two tickets on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last. Limited walk-in seats will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Members of the public are welcome to queue up at the 1/F Foyer of the HKFA 45 minutes before the event begins. Each person can register for one ticket while supplies last.
