Music lovers should not miss "City Hall Virtuosi Series: Dizi Recital by Ricky Yeung Wai-kit" to be staged in November
******************************************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present the "Dizi Recital by Ricky Yeung Wai-kit" under the "City Hall Virtuosi Series" in November. Renowned dizi performer Ricky Yeung will collaborate with pipa performer Sha Jingshan and pianist Timothy Kwok in playing an array of works rich in Chinese regional styles. Yeung will share his experience and insights on his 30 years of practice and performance of the dizi, and music lovers should not miss the recital.

In the recital, Yeung will bring audiences two of his own compositions, namely the Hong Kong premiere of "Poetic Homeland" and "Cantonese Bamboo". The former, inspired by a poem written by Tang dynasty poet Han Yu, is a fusion of Chang'an and Chaoshan music styles, which express Yeung's intense nostalgia for his homeland. The latter, in the style of Cantonese music, portrays bamboo in a variety of forms with joyful tunes by using diverse playing techniques of the dizi with pipa. In addition, Yeung has also selected classic pieces that highlight his learning achievements with dizi masters over the years, including "A Lyrical Melody of the Grassland", a song blended with a Mongolian dizi music style; "Four Movements on Northern Shaanxi", a melody that depicts the simplicity of the local customs of northern Shaanxi; "The Sea of South China", a composition presenting the cultural scenes of the coastal region in Chaoshan, Guangdong; and "The Swallows Have Returned", a work that brings hope and longing.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Yeung is the first doctoral degree holder in dizi performance in China. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the China Conservatory of Music, under the mentorship of the dizi and xiao maestro Zhang Weiliang. He has also been coached by many dizi virtuosi including Cheung Heung-wah, Li Zhen, Zeng Yongqing, Huang Jincheng, Sun Yongzhi, Jiang Guoji and Ma Di. Yeung has given solo recitals in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei, and has performed alongside many renowned conductors, including Zhang Lie, Wang Fujian and Tsung Yeh as well as with orchestras such as the Guangdong National Orchestra, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
