Housing Authority partners with Department of Health to promote healthy recipes for elderly (with photo)
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

The elderly need to eat right to ensure sufficient intake of nutrients, in order to stay healthy and combat all kinds of disease.

"While a proper diet is the key to staying healthy, it is a pity that the elderly often have difficulty in chewing due to bad teeth, or have the 'three highs' - high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. Consequently, they have limited food choices and can struggle to enjoy culinary delights, and this may lead to nutritional deficiencies," the Deputy Director of Housing (Estate Management), Mr Ricky Yeung, said today (October 15).

"When we learnt that the Elderly Healthy Service (EHS) of the Department of Health (DH) has especially designed a set of healthy seasonal recipes for the elderly, we decided to work together to introduce the recipes to our elderly tenants. We have recorded the recipes in videos for broadcast on the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA)'s Housing Channel and social media to benefit more people."

The HA is collaborating with the DH once again to present this healthy and tasty selection of seasonal recipes to public rental housing tenants. The recipes include relevant dietary tips for patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and gout, so they can make suitable adjustments to the recipes.

The "Healthy Recipes for Elderly" videos will be broadcast on the Housing Channel from mid-October to June next year. Public rental housing tenants can watch the videos on TVs installed at lift lobbies. Tenants can also watch the videos at home or on their mobile phones by scanning the QR code on the poster displayed at lift lobbies. The full recipes of the dishes can be viewed by scanning the QR Code to the EHS website (www.elderly.gov.hk/english/healthy_ageing/healthy_diet/meal_planning_healthy_recipes/seasonal_and_festive_healthy_recipes.html).

Members of the public who are interested may access the HA's social media channels at YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/HKHousingAuthority), Public Housing Vista (www.facebook.com/HKHousingAuthority) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/hkhousingauthority) in order to view the videos.

Over the years, the HA's Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates programme has been promoting healthy ageing among elderly tenants. Following last year's promotion of the "Stay Active at Home" video series encouraging seniors to work out at home, this year the HA is again collaborating with the DH to promote a healthy diet among its elderly tenants.
