******************************************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will bring to audiences the artificial intelligence (AI) opera "chasing waterfalls" by German multimedia artist collective phase7 performing.arts in November. The work investigates the numerous manifestations of humanity in our digital age and depicts the human pursuit of the intangible digital self.

"chasing waterfalls" is one of the programmes designated by the New Vision Arts Festival (NVAF) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and is exclusively sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). It is one of the many initiatives supported by the HKJC's approved donation of $630 million to the Government of the HKSAR to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, demonstrating that the HKJC is resolute in pursuing its purpose of acting continuously for the betterment of society, all in support of creating stronger communities together.

"chasing waterfalls" had its world premiere at the Semperoper in Germany last month. Co-commissioned by the NVAF, this opera - developed and co-presented by phase7 performing.arts - is making its Asian premiere in Hong Kong. Local rising musical star Angus Lee was engaged to co-compose the music for the opera and assume the role of conductor, while Berlin's studio for sonic experiences kling klang klong was invited to contribute the electro-acoustic composition alongside the innovative AI voice specially created together with T Systems MMS. Following the algorithms of the music, AI engages in deep learning and gradually becomes sentient.

"chasing waterfalls" will be held at 8pm on November 5 and at 3pm on November 6 at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium. It will be performed in English and German with Chinese and English surtitles. A meet-the-artist session will be held after the evening performance on November 5.
