LCSD to present "Our Music Talents Series: DIM · Pipa Recital by Belle Shiu" in October
******************************************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present "Our Music Talents Series: DIM · Pipa Recital by Belle Shiu" in October. Local young pipa talent Belle Shiu will use "dots", described as the granular notes of the pipa, as the theme to perform compositions of various styles for music fans. The recital will also adopt the sound for "dot" in Cantonese syllables "DIM" into an extended theme of "Dive Into Music", inviting the audiences to revel in the thriving world of pipa music.

In the recital, Shiu will showcase the flexibility and versatility of the pipa by playing several traditional and modern solo pieces with her masterful skills. The programme includes classic pieces "White Snow in Early Spring" and "King Chu Doffs His Armour"; "Xian Zi Yun", a composition that features the style of jingyun dagu (a narrative singing style in the Beijing dialect with drum accompaniment); and "Jazz Pipa", a fusion of Western jazz and the traditional sound of the pipa. For the finale, Shiu will join numerous young versatile musicians to perform two world premiere works, namely Tam Yat-sing's sextet "Mañjusaka" and Chow Jun-yi's pipa and string Octet "So What?!", to conclude the concert on a high note with the perfect ensemble of Chinese and Western instruments.

Shiu is a pipa musician with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Graduated from the Master of Music programme at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2016, Shiu has worked with renowned musicians including violist Yuri Bashmet and Vladimir Mendelssohn, as well as cellist Trey Lee. She has also played pipa solos as a guest performer at various international music and arts festivals. In 2015, she became the first Chinese musician being invited to perform at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland.
