******************************************************************************************
The Under Secretary for Education, Mr Sze Chun-fai, today (September 1) visited Farm Road Government Primary School (FRGPS) to join the school opening assembly.

Addressing the assembly, Mr Sze thanked the headmistress and teachers for their efforts in preparing for the new school year, as well as their anti-epidemic work to ensure a safe learning environment for students. He reminded students to stay vigilant to maintain personal hygiene, wear masks properly, keep an appropriate social distance and avoid crowd gatherings to fight against the virus together.

Mr Sze said, "Parents play a vital role in their children's growth and learning. The Education Bureau (EDB) has all along attached great importance to home-school co-operation and parent education. We have introduced the Positive Parent Campaign to foster a positive mindset among parents, such that their children would grow up happily." He said that family is the first school for a child, and parents are the first teachers for children. He called on parents and schools to co-create a positive environment for students' happy and healthy development and to nurture them to be lifelong learners who are able, virtuous and responsible with vision and love for their country and families in order to embrace the opportunities and challenges in the future.

FRGPS values home-school co-operation and parent education. It organises a parent-child activity titled "Love Letters to Parents" every year for parents and children to learn how to share with each other, and be grateful for and appreciate the contributions of each other. In addition, FRGPS has established "FRGPS Parent Academy" to encourage parents' participation in different parent education activities to enhance their competency and understanding on how to communicate and get along with their children.

In recent years, FRGPS has put great emphasis on nurturing perseverance, gratitude and empathy in students, guiding them to adopt an optimistic attitude to manage themselves and show care to others. Mr Sze also encouraged students to study hard with perseverance and learn to care about, cherish and be thankful to people around them, including the principal and teachers for the teaching and guidance, and their parents for the nurturing and selfless dedication.

At the school opening assembly, Mr Sze and the Chairperson of the Parent Teacher Association of the school took part in the "Three Hearts Together" ceremony with student representatives, signifying their joint commitment to fostering perseverance, gratitude and empathy.

In addition, the school arranged an activity for students to give away "Start the Day Full of Energy" cheer-up cards, with a view to promoting to fellow students the importance of mental health. Mr Sze encouraged the school to promote the tips and e-reminder for parents on "Home-School Collaboration: Welcome to the New School Year" produced by the EDB to parents and appeal to them to understand the needs of their children and support them to adapt to the new school year through concerted effort.

Mr Sze also called on parents to arrange COVID-19 vaccination for their children as soon as possible. For eligible students who have received two doses of vaccines, they should receive the third dose without further delay. With parents setting a good example, their children will follow suit and be protected more comprehensively and effectively.
