******************************************************************************************
The Housing Bureau (HB) today (August 19) held a sharing session on "Spirit of the President's Important Speech" at the Hong Kong Housing Authority Headquarters. The Secretary for Housing, Ms Winnie Ho, spoke at the session, enabling colleagues to have a deeper understanding of the essence of the speech delivered by President Xi Jinping at the meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

President Xi raised "four musts" for the new administration in his speech: it must fully and faithfully implement the principle of "one country, two systems"; it must uphold the Central Government's overall jurisdiction while securing the HKSAR's high degree of autonomy; it must ensure that Hong Kong is administered by patriots; and it must maintain Hong Kong's distinctive status and advantages. President Xi also set out "four proposals" for the newly inaugurated Government, i.e. further improve governance, continue to create strong impetus for growth, earnestly address people's concerns and difficulties in livelihood, and work together to safeguard harmony and stability. President Xi particularly said "the people's aspiration for a better life is what we are striving for", and stated that one of the biggest aspirations of people in Hong Kong is to have more decent housing.

Addressing the sharing session, Ms Ho said President Xi's important speech had expounded in depth on the crucial guidance on the future development of Hong Kong. Housing is of the greatest concern among all key issues and must be addressed without delay. The primary task of the newly established HB is to provide a living environment that people can enjoy and thrive in. To this end, suitable housing policies and measures to address the housing problem will be formulated by the HB in order to respond to the people's needs.

Ms Ho encouraged colleagues to adopt innovative thinking and professional knowledge in a concerted manner, and proactively incorporate new technologies and construction methods, so as to improve the living conditions and build a better home for people in Hong Kong.

The Permanent Secretary for Housing/Director of Housing, Miss Agnes Wong, and other participants also shared their thoughts on President Xi's speech in the sharing session, which included speaking on the work focus of the Housing Department (HD) and the hope to put "earnestly addressing people's concerns" into practice. Around 600 colleagues of the HB and the HD attended the session or joined via online live broadcast today. The content of the sharing session will be uploaded to the HD's e-learning platform to enable more colleagues to learn about the spirit of the President's important speech.
