The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO) showcased Hong Kong's strengths at the Sydney Lunar Festival Dragon Boat Races held in Sydney, Australia on February 5 and 6.

Cheered on by numerous spectators, the Hong Kong Team organised by the HKETO won third place in the Hong Kong Connect Cup races on February 6.

The HKETO also set up a marquee during the two-day dragon boat races at Darling Harbour to promote Hong Kong. With an image of the magnificent Hong Kong skyline along Victoria Harbour, photos of various large-scale sports events held in the city and Hong Kong athletes as the backdrop, the marquee demonstrated the vibrancy of Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan city and a sports hub. Pamphlets and leaflets on various topics, including the talent admission schemes, the Basic Law and tourist attractions, were distributed to members of the public to share the exciting developments in Hong Kong. Souvenirs for promoting Hong Kong were very well received.

"Despite the pandemic, Hong Kong has demonstrated remarkable resilience and our fundamentals remain strong. While we celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the year 2022 marks an important milestone as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. We will organise a wide range of celebration events to showcase Hong Kong's exemplary achievements over the past 25 years and consolidate Hong Kong's status as an international city," a spokesman for the HKETO said today (February 7).

The Festival, organised by the City of Sydney, is one of the largest celebrations of the Lunar New Year outside Asia. Running from January 29 to February 13 this year, various events, including a lunar lantern display, cultural performances and dragon boat races, are being held to celebrate the Lunar New Year with the public.

The Dragon Boat Races in Darling Harbour was a highlight of the Festival. The two-day regatta, with over 1 200 paddlers competing and tens of thousands of spectators this year, is the biggest dragon boat event in the southern hemisphere. Three of the races were named the Hong Kong Connect Cup, the Hong Kong Metropolis Cup, and the Hong Kong Bright Future Cup, with trophies presented by the Director of the HKETO, Miss Trista Lim.

"The Festival brought a lot of joy to the Sydney community. We are delighted to be part of it once again this year to share the happiness with them and promote Hong Kong in the most important Chinese traditional festival," the spokesman said.

The HKETO also displayed Hong Kong-themed banners with Lunar New Year greeting messages to wish the public a healthy and joyous year in some key city locations across Sydney during the festive period.
