Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of the transportation, storage and courier services sector in 2020

     According to the results of the 2020 Annual Survey of Economic Activities – Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector released today (November 29) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) of the transportation, storage and courier services sector amounted to $495.2 billion in 2020, representing a decrease of 9.9% compared with 2019; on a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 10.1% compared with 2019 to $19.0 million in 2020.

     Operating expenses and compensation of employees of this sector altogether amounted to $451.0 billion in 2020, representing a decrease of 7.7% compared with 2019; on a per establishment basis, they decreased by 8.0% compared with 2019 to $17.3 million in 2020.

     Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased by 27.0% compared with 2019 to $44.2 billion in 2020; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased from $2.3 million in 2019 to $1.7 million in 2020. Gross surplus accounted for 8.9% of total receipts of this sector in 2020, decreased by 2.1 percentage points compared with 2019.

     Industry value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, decreased by 21.5% compared with 2019 to $115.2 billion in 2020; on a per establishment basis, industry value added was $4.4 million in 2020, which decreased by 21.7% compared with 2019.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised about 26 100 establishments and engaged some 212 100 persons, or an average of 8.1 persons per establishment, in 2020.

     Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the five largest industry groupings in terms of industry value added in 2020 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation; (2) land passenger transport; (3) cross-border water transport; (4) other transportation support activities; and (5) land freight transport. They together accounted for 78.2% of the industry value added of the sector.

     In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $83.4 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $79.5 billion in 2020. Gross surplus significantly decreased from $25.3 billion in 2019 to $4.0 billion in 2020, accounting for 4.8% of total receipts in 2020. Industry value added decreased sharply by 49.0% compared with 2019 to $29.7 billion.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $40.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $36.1 billion in 2020. Gross surplus decreased from $11.6 billion in 2019 to $4.2 billion in 2020, accounting for 10.4% of total receipts in 2020. Industry value added decreased considerably by 39.5% compared with 2019 to $17.7 billion.

     In the cross-border water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $123.7 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $112.0 billion in 2020. Gross surplus increased from $2.8 billion in 2019 to $11.8 billion in 2020, accounting for 9.5% of total receipts in 2020. Industry value added increased sharply by 75.4% compared with 2019 to $16.8 billion.

     In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $149.0 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $140.8 billion in 2020. Gross surplus increased from $6.1 billion in 2019 to $8.2 billion in 2020, accounting for 5.5% of total receipts in 2020. Industry value added increased by 4.8% compared with 2019 to $15.7 billion.

     In the land freight transport industry, total receipts amounted to $23.8 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $20.7 billion in 2020. Gross surplus increased from $2.5 billion in 2019 to $3.0 billion in 2020, accounting for 12.8% of total receipts in 2020. Industry value added decreased by 1.6% compared with 2019 to $10.2 billion.
