LCSD launches free online lecture series "Eight History-Making Musical Inventions"

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (October 22) launched a series of free online music lectures, "Eight History-Making Musical Inventions", hosted by renowned music practitioner Dennis Wu to introduce eight inventions that have changed the course of music, and how their inventors wrote important pages for music. The first episode is now available at the department's Edutainment Channel.

      The first episode introduces the movable type for sheet music invented by Venetian printer Ottaviano Petrucci. Not only did the new invention turn Venice into a distribution hub for sheet music in the 15th century, it also resulted in the rise of non-religious music.

     The topics of other episodes are "Pianoforte", "Metronome", "Terraced Auditorium", "Phonograph", "Audio Oscillator", "Walkman" and "MP3". Details and release schedules of these episodes will be announced on the programme website later.

     Programme host Wu is an active music critic, composer and producer. He was the producer and host of a number of programmes on Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 4. He is also an active speaker at music talks, student concerts and workshops.

     The free online music lecture series "Eight History-Making Musical Inventions" is conducted in Cantonese, and each episode is approximately 15 minutes long.
