InnoCarnival 2021 to run from October 23 to 31 (with photos)
************************************************************
Organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), InnoCarnival 2021 (IC 2021) will be held from October 23 to 31. Under the theme "Innovate for a Bright Future", IC 2021, supported by 53 partners comprising seven universities, five research and development (R&D) centres, 11 government departments and 30 organisations, will be held in a hybrid format as a physical and online event involving a number of physical exhibits of local innovation and technology (I&T) achievements at the Hong Kong Science Park as well as webinars and online workshops. Through an array of interesting activities, it is expected to enhance public interest and knowledge about I&T and further promote an I&T culture in the community.

Addressing the press preview for IC 2021 today (September 23), the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun, said that since the beginning of last year, the whole world has been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. As a new normal, I&T applications have been widely adopted in global trade, economic activities and even lifestyles. The Commission has been proactively nurturing I&T talents, promoting technological application, fostering an I&T culture, supporting applied research and development, and providing assistance to technology start-ups. The Commission will continue to strengthen its measures on the policy and resource fronts, thereby creating a favourable environment for I&T development in the industry and the community.

The press preview exhibited R&D projects of some participating teams with briefings from their representatives on the inspirational ideas, R&D processes, features and functions, and applications of their projects. These projects include the research initiatives by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to develop a system for conducting various cycling and resistance tests and producing low-resistance suits for the Hong Kong cycling team, which successfully assisted the team in striving for excellent performance at the Tokyo Olympics, and Robo-9 developed by the Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre, which offers a cost-effective robot vision and sensing solution to assist visually impaired persons to avoid obstacles and provide walking guidance. The above R&D projects are all subsidised by the Innovation and Technology Fund under the ITC.

In addition, Diocesan Girls' School, an awardee in the Intelligent Design Category in the 23rd Hong Kong Youth Science & Technology Innovation Competition, introduced its invention, Asthemeter, which is a device to help asthma patients to detect any abnormality and give them sufficient time to retrieve an inhaler or seek help. The device consists of a humidity sensor, an eTVOC sensor, and connection to an app that is able to keep track of the patient's asthma situation.

Furthermore, IC 2021 will set up 36 booths at the Hong Kong Science Park, displaying a series of I&T products and interactive games (including a Kinect motion game), together with 144 InnoTech workshops (including parent-child workshops) and 46 webinars through the online platform, with the aim of showing the public the importance of I&T in daily life, and inspiring the younger generation to pursue knowledge and cultivate interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

All IC 2021 activities are free of charge. Preregistration for some activities is required. Details will be uploaded to the thematic webpage (innocarnival.hk) later this month. Members of the public are welcome to join the activities.
