The Salute to Teachers 2021 - Teachers' Day and Commendation Certificate Presentation Ceremony organised by the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign (CROTC) was held today (September 20). The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, officiated at the ceremony and paid tribute to more than 1 400 teachers for their dedication to the teaching profession this year.

The Chairman of the CROTC, Ms Kathy Chung, said that she appreciated the teachers for passing on knowledge with much love and care to students. She sincerely thanked the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government for the provision and investment of a large number of resources in education in the past few years and is confident that with the active support of the Central Government and the HKSAR Government, teachers and various stakeholders in the education sector can join hands to create a better future for the next generation of Hong Kong.

Mrs Lam said that she would like to thank all the teachers for standing fast at their posts and upholding professionalism, and expressed the hope that teachers will continue to help students build positive values. She encouraged all teachers to restore Hong Kong's educational order, get youth back on the right track and strive to cultivate them into quality citizens with a sense of national identity and social responsibility, nurturing an affection for Hong Kong as well as an international perspective. She urged the education sector to continue to fight COVID-19 as one, get vaccinated, and work together for the health of the school campus and the community.

The Teachers' Commendation Scheme organised by the CROTC, which is now in its 26th year, aims to foster a culture of respect for teachers. Secondary schools, primary schools, kindergartens and special schools may each nominate for commendation two teachers who have shown commitment and excellence in teaching. Over 33 000 teachers have been commended.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony today included the Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung; the Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms Michelle Li; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Mr Tim Lui; and the Chairman of the Committee on Home-School Co-operation, Mr Eugene Fong. A total of around 700 people, comprising principals, teachers and other guests, participated in the event.
