LegCo congratulates Hong Kong athletes on their historic achievements in Tokyo Olympics

The various events participated by Hong Kong athletes in the Tokyo Olympic Games have successfully completed. The athletes have made the history by bringing home 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Andrew Leung, on behalf of all LegCo Members, today (August 8) extended his heartiest congratulations to the Hong Kong, China Delegation.
Mr Leung said, "Facing the global epidemic, the Olympic Games had to be postponed and the training of Hong Kong athletes had also been significantly affected. This however did not stop our athletes from going ahead and performing to the best of their abilities in a number of world-class events. While some athletes had missed out on medals in some of the competitions, they had achieved the best ever results for Hong Kong. They have written a glorious page for themselves as well as for Hong Kong. The coaching, training and support teams behind our athletes also deserve great credit for the splendid performance of our Delegation. I would like to pay my respects to all of you."
Mr Leung continued, "Like many Hong Kong people, I witnessed our athletes demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversities. Their courage to seek change and timely adjustment of mentality and tactics had resulted in a series of heartwarming and inspiring scenes in the competitions. I hope that this positivity, solidarity and indomitable spirit will continue to flourish in our society."
Mr Leung added, "The progress and success of the athletes prove that Hong Kong is a place where dreams can be fulfilled. Young people, as long as they set the right goals, put aside personal gains and losses, and strive to seek progress, will be able to break new grounds and make remarkable achievements. The stories of how our athletes fight for victories are in fact Hong Kong's success story. The sweat, tears and experience of athletes have touched our hearts deeply. Dear athletes, every one of you is the pride of Hong Kong!"
Mr Leung hopes that Hong Kong's outstanding performance in this year's Olympics only represents the beginning of Hong Kong's move towards the world class sports stage. LegCo would continue to work with the Government and various sectors of the community to offer our unreserved support for the sustainable development of the sports industry.
