Hong Kong House at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2021 opens in Tsunan, Japan (with photos)
*****************************************************************************************
Co-presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, the Hong Kong House at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2021 opened in Tsunan, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, today (July 22), in the hope of connecting humans and nature through art and showcasing arts and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Japan.

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is one of the largest international outdoor art festivals in the world. An open call for artwork proposals for the Hong Kong House was launched by the Art Promotion Office (APO) last year. The proposals had to respond to the unique culture, history and abundant natural resources of Echigo-Tsumari. From over 90 proposals received, two artists and one artist group - Lam Tung-pang, Stanley Wong (anothermountainman) and Toolbox Percussion - were selected by the joint adjudication panel of Hong Kong and Japan to showcase their artworks at the Hong Kong House in 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Due to the pandemic, the featured Hong Kong artist Lam Tung-pang was unable to visit the house in person. Lam learned about Tsunan, where the Hong Kong House is located, through literary works, personal interviews, online information and other secondary sources to imagine himself being there and create the work "Half-step House" remotely with his vivid imagination. The artist has given the space a facelift with two different approaches: half of the house now features text, music, graphics, moving images and other elements, arranged to conjure up an indoor landscape, while the neighbouring half, in contrast, is left completely empty - an intentional void. Lam invites viewers to use their imagination to complete the full picture of the landscape. The installation will be on display from today until October 31.

Besides the exhibition at the Hong Kong House in Tsunan, Japan, this project is accompanied by a series of online programmes commencing in late August, including a sharing session on "Half-step House" by Lam and students from the Department of Art History of the University of Hong Kong who joined the internship programme; the music performance premiere of "In-between", composed for the Hong Kong House by Haw Par Music; the video premiere of "A Land and Its People", produced by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Jockey Club Media 21 together with the student ambassadors; and cookery demonstration of fusion food in the video "The Tastes of Land and Water", inspired by the culinary cultures of Hong Kong and Japan. The activities will offer a sumptuous feast for the eyes, the ears and the palate of the viewers as a virtual celebration of the humanism, landscapes and people of Japan.      The Hong Kong House is presented by the LCSD and organised by the APO, with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale Executive Committee being the collaborator, the Department of Art History of the University of Hong Kong being the internship programme collaborator, and Haw Par Music Foundation and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Jockey Club Media 21 being the activity collaborators.
