Cluster of Rhinovirus/Enterovirus cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following announcement today (July 21):
 
     Three paediatric patients (two males and one female, aged from 8 months to 5 years) in a paediatric ward had presented with respiratory symptoms since July 10. Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the three paediatric patients and their test results are positive for Rhinovirus/Enterovirus. They are being treated under isolation with stable condition.
 
     The infection control team has discussed with the relevant department and the Centre for Health Protection. The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward concerned:
 
     1. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
     2. Enhanced medical surveillance of the paediatric patients in the ward concerned; and
     3. Applied stringent droplet and contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene of staff and paediatric patients.
 
     The hospital will closely monitor other paediatric patients in the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
