FHB announces plan to build Tung Chung Temporary Market (with video)
********************************************************************
The Food and Health Bureau (FHB) announced today (June 21) the selection of a suitable site in Tung Chung Town Centre for establishment of a temporary market at Fu Tung Street near Tung Chung MTR Station. The market is expected to be completed for commissioning in the fourth quarter of next year at the soonest.

The Chief Executive announced in the 2018 Policy Address the decision to build a new public market at the lower floors of a commercial building at Area 6 which is adjacent to Tung Chung MTR Station. In addition, the establishment of a new public market at Area 133A of Tung Chung New Town Extension is under preliminary planning.

The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, said, "Taking into account the lead time of building the new markets, the FHB has selected a suitable site in Tung Chung Town Centre to provide a temporary market so as to offer more choices to nearby residents in purchasing fresh provisions."

Upon study by relevant departments, the Government plans to consolidate the area between Fu Tung Street and Cheung Tung Road for establishment of a temporary market. Situated in the vicinity of Tung Chung MTR Station and the public transport interchange, the selected site is easily accessible and is expected to benefit more residents in the district. With reference to the design concept and construction method of the FEHD Skylight Market (formerly known as Tin Shui Wai Temporary Market) commissioned in December last year, the modular integrated construction method will also be adopted for the Tung Chung Temporary Market with a view to shortening the construction time and completing construction works within a year's time.

The market will be wholly covered with air-conditioning at all stalls. About 36 stalls are tentatively planned to be set up for selling fresh provisions such as fish, meat, vegetables and fruits.

The FHB, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the Architectural Services Department and relevant departments are working closely to press ahead with the project. The Government will consult the District Council as soon as possible.
