TAC briefed on Universal Accessibility Programme

The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) was briefed today (November 16) on the latest progress of the Universal Accessibility (UA) Programme.
The Government has been striving to create a barrier-free and accessible environment and launched the UA Programme in August 2012 to proactively retrofit barrier-free access facilities at walkways. The scope of the UA Programme has subsequently been expanded with a view to covering more walkways.
In response to public demand, the Government announced in 2019 that a Special Scheme would be launched under the UA Programme to retrofit lifts at public walkways of three types of housing estates under the Hong Kong Housing Authority, namely estates under the Tenants Purchase Scheme and the Buy or Rent Option Scheme and public rental housing estates with properties divested.
The TAC Chairman, Professor Stephen Cheung, said, "Members support the Government's efforts in providing barrier-free access facilities at public walkways and welcome the launch of the Special Scheme under the UA Programme, which will benefit more people. Members also noted the Government's progress in implementing the UA Programme."
