Research Grants Council to present public lectures on "COVID-19 and New Treatments for Liver Cancer" on November 14

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present its third set of public lectures this year under the theme "COVID-19 and New Treatments for Liver Cancer" on November 14 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
The RGC has invited Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, and Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Albert Chan, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Since the discovery of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus in 2003, Professor Yuen and his team have been making preparations for a novel infectious disease. Professor Yuen will deliver a talk titled "Combat against COVID-19 in HKSAR" to review the precautions and response plans in Hong Kong since January this year, and introduce the research on and preventive measures against this highly contagious virus.
Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in Hong Kong, with 1 800 new cases per year. Liver resection remains the only hope of a cure but the treatment is suitable for only 30 per cent of patients. In his talk titled "Broadening the horizon of treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma", Dr Chan will discuss novel treatment procedures including "Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy", and a new multi-modality treatment approach to render locally advanced liver cancer operable.
The public lectures of the RGC aim at arousing public interest in local research developments. Since 2009, the RGC has invited numerous leading scholars to speak at these lectures.
