"Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence - Tung Wah's Fundraising Culture and Social Development" exhibition relives collective memory of Hong Kong people over a century (with photos)

     The exhibition entitled "Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence - Tung Wah's Fundraising Culture and Social Development" will begin tomorrow (October 28) at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Featuring more than 200 invaluable artefacts and a vast array of historical photos, the exhibition allows visitors to gain an understanding of the social development of Hong Kong through the fundraising culture of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) and to relive the collective memory of Hong Kong people embodied therein.

     Since its inception in 1870, the TWGHs has provided medical, educational and social services to the people of Hong Kong. The TWGHs has also engaged in humanitarian efforts, such as disaster relief, burials and bone repatriation services, and refugee support for Chinese communities at home and abroad. The TWGHs' contribution to the Chinese populace is widely recognised and deeply appreciated in all walks of life.

     To sustain and expand its diverse services, the TWGHs organises a variety of fundraising activities every year. These include door-to-door collection of alms in the Group's early days, the charity Cantonese opera concerts by prominent stars and the charity funfairs and television galas of the post-war period as well as raising funds through online platforms in the present time so as to reach out to generous supporters. Such activities nurture public awareness about charity and capture the evolving faces of Hong Kong society through the years as well as reflect the 150-year-old establishment's ability to keep abreast of changing trends over time. The TWGHs' success in connecting fundraising with mass entertainment enriches people's lives for those who derive enjoyment through philanthropy.
 
     The exhibition is co-presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the TWGHs, and is co-organised by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Tung Wah Museum.

     "Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence - Tung Wah's Fundraising Culture and Social Development" will run from October 28 to January 25 next year at Thematic Galleries 1 and 2 and the Function Place on the first floor of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, which is located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin.
