Final report on accident of Zlin Z 242 L aircraft published
***********************************************************
The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) today (October 9) published the final report (2/2020) on the investigation into an aircraft accident that occurred off Fu Tau Sha in the Tolo Channel in Tai Po, involving a Zlin Z 242 L aircraft (registration B-LUR) operated by Hong Kong Aviation Club on February 27, 2016.

The aircraft was flying over the Tolo Channel in the Tai Po area. At around 2.10pm, it lost control inflight and descended rapidly prior to impact in the sea off Fu Tau Sha. The pilot was fatally injured. The occurrence was classified as an accident according to the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

"The investigation report was published by the AAIA with the objective of identifying the circumstances and causes of the accident with a view to preventing recurrence," an AAIA spokesperson said.

The investigation was conducted by a team of professional investigators in strict adherence to international standards established by the ICAO. The investigation identified that the pilot concerned might have elected to practise stall recovery exercises in various flap configurations and power settings while in the Tolo Area. It is possible that during one of the stall and recovery exercises with the aircraft in an approach or landing flap configuration, the aircraft entered an inadvertent incipient spin that progressed into a fully developed spin from which the pilot was unable to recover. The investigation team has made four safety recommendations.

Throughout the investigation, all parties concerned were properly consulted on the report. The report is available for download at the AAIA webpage (www.thb.gov.hk/aaia/eng/investigation_reports/index.htm).
