The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joshua Law, visited the Government Records Service (GRS) under the Administration Wing today (October 30), and met with its management and staff of various grades to learn more about their work and matters of concern.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Law first met with the Director of Administration, Ms Esther Leung, and senior staff to receive an update on the GRS' work in managing government records as well as appraising, preserving and conserving archival records and promoting local documentary heritage, and the challenges confronting them.

Mr Law then visited the Public Records Office to understand how colleagues acquire, appraise and preserve records and materials of enduring value and make them available for public access. He also visited the Preservation Service Office, where he was briefed by colleagues on their daily duties including digitisation of archival holdings, production of microfilm and conservation of damaged archival records.

Touring the exhibition hall and search room, Mr Law was briefed on the public programmes of the GRS, including exhibitions, seminars, workshops and group visits, which are organised on a regular basis to promote public awareness of local documentary heritage.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Law met with staff representatives of various grades of the GRS at a tea gathering to exchange views on matters that concern them. He praised colleagues for their professionalism, and encouraged them to continue contributing to the preservation and promotion of the documentary heritage of Hong Kong.
