Company fined for contravening the Employment Ordinance
*******************************************************
JCL Transport and Logistics Limited was prosecuted by the Labour Department for defaulting on wages, payments in lieu of notice, end of year payments, annual leave pays, and the sums awarded by the Labour Tribunal (LT) in violation of the Employment Ordinance (EO). The company was convicted at Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (October 9) and fined a total of $115,000.

The company failed to pay wages, payments in lieu of notice, end of year payments and annual leave pays to an employee within seven days after the expiry of the wage periods and termination of employment, as required by the EO. The company also failed to pay the employee the awarded sum of about $1.15 million within 14 days after the date of the award.

"The judgment will disseminate a strong message to all employers that they have to pay wages, payments in lieu of notice, end of year payments, annual leave pays and the awarded sums of the LT order to employees in accordance with the EO," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.

"The Labour Department will not tolerate these offences and will spare no effort in enforcing the law and safeguarding employees' statutory rights," the spokesman added.
