Film Archive to screen restored version of "Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom" in support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
In support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present a special screening of the restored version of "Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom" (1959) at the Cinema of the HKFA at 2pm on October 27 (Sunday). The film stars Yam Kim-fai, Pak Suet-sin, Lan Chi Pak and Leung Sing-por.

The HKFA began the preparation work for the digital restoration of "Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom" two years ago. Due to the poor condition of the original black-and-white negative, the HKFA used three 35mm acetate prints of relatively better quality as the source materials for the restoration. After supplementing the missing frames and audio, the HKFA converted the film to 2K digital files. Subsequently, the HKFA commissioned a Japanese film laboratory to undertake digital restoration, which included reducing picture flickering, removing scratches and dirt, and conducting colour correction.

Directed by Lee Tit and written by Tong Tik-sang, "Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom" is regarded as a masterpiece of Cantonese opera film. It tells of a thwarted romance between a courtesan played by Pak and a scholar played by Yam, who fall in love as they exchange poems.

The film is in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.

Tickets priced at $45 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For credit card telephone bookings, please call 2111 5999. For programme details, please call 2739 2139 or visit www.filmarchive.gov.hk/en_US/web/hkfa/programmesandexhibitions/programmes/2019unesco.html.

In 2005, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated October 27 of every year as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. It promotes awareness of the importance of preserving audio-visual documents from the past, which play an integral role in recording local and regional cultures.
