Company fined for defaulting on payments awarded by Labour Tribunal
*******************************************************************
Hang Cheong Engineering International Company Limited was prosecuted by the Labour Department (LD) for defaulting on the sums awarded by the Labour Tribunal (LT) as required by the Employment Ordinance (EO). The company pleaded guilty today (April 27) at Eastern Magistrates' Courts and was fined a total of $100,000. The company was also ordered to effect a sum of about $230,000 via the Court to three employees.

The company failed to pay the three employees the awarded sum of about $230,000 in total within 14 days after the dates set out by the terms of the LT awards in accordance with the EO.

"The ruling helps disseminate a strong message to all employers that they have to comply with the EO and pay the awarded sums to employees according to the terms of the awards of the LT or Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board," a spokesman for the LD said.
